John Smiling on a Sunny Afternoon - Sharon Wood

Growing up in rural North Texas I learned to appreciate the outdoors at an early age, especially fishing. From the time I was allowed to venture out every available hour has been spent with a fishing rod or a related book nearby. Over the years fly fishing has become a passion second only to the love of my wife Sharon.

A passion for fishing and traveling has allowed me to fly fish in 16 different states from Florida to Washington. The last 30 years have allowed me to average approximately 150 days a year on or near the water. Whether in a bass boat, a float tube or standing in a river or lake every one of those days has taught me something about the outdoors. A life-long study of ichthyology, entomology and aquatic environments has allowed me to view those days with a critical yet appreciative eye.

Currently living in Cody, Wyoming fishing is still a major focus while embarking on a career in writing and returning to college at the age of 51 to seek a degree in Secondary Education. I have published articles in Flyfishing and Tying Journal and Northwest Fly Fishing. I have been writing for Suite 101 since October 2010 and received an Editor’s Choice Award in February 2011.

I am an accomplished fly tyer and fly designer with many of my original patterns being successfully fished among an ever growing group of devoted fly fishers. Several of my flies, traditional and original, are featured on salmonfly.net a website devoted to salmon, steelhead and sea-run trout flies and fly tying.
